Please, anyone with some inside knowledge on this, please enlighten me.
I used to remember a time when I would go in to a CD music shop, typically Speedy or any other variant, and buy music CDs or cassettes, be it international or local musicians.
So the other day, I popped in to a local CD music shop and it is a rarity to find locally produced music CD post 2008.
There’s the Anuar Zain first album- produced in 1998 when he first came out. Also an assortment of nostalgic compilations from a variety of artist such as DJ Dave, Sharifah Aini to 1980’s band ‘Medicine’.
The sad thing is~ its not the only CD music shop that I go to that ‘do not have stock’ of new local artist music. Most if not all music shop do not have new music CDs.
It’s sad really to have to rely to YouTube or illegal downloads to purchase Malaysian music, but that’s just what I’ve got to do for my own consumption.
But my question: how are the new Malaysian musicians making any money?
Royalties? sponsorship and endorsements? Public/party appearance? Live shows? Reality TV?
At the time of writing this, iTunes music store have yet to reach our shores.
Are the incomes enough that they don’t actually have to make a physical CD album just like the old days?
