  • How to setup connect your PC to a public network with a Malaysian USB Modem/Router

I’ve been figuring this thing out for the past 4 days and I’ve finally manage to do it. It stumped me a little bit and there was not a lot of help online. So, I think I’ll type it out here, in case some poor soul might have had the same problem and is losing sleep to look for a solution.

    More after the jump

    Setting Up Server

So I was setting up this server. When I say server, I don’t mean the big ass kind, just a small tincy wincy MiniARM server. Its running Linux OS and connected to a network router via a RJ45 (your typical network cable). The router is connected to the internet via a typical Huawei USB modem, E173 is the popular one now, but I’m using E153. The Huawei modem is usually supplied together by your telco (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, uMobile etc).

    A similar scenario…

    1. Your own server/PC

    2. IP Cameras

A similar/typical scenario would be connecting your IP Camera to the internet with a USB modem. Due to some restrictions on the telco side, and lack of tutorials online, you will lose sleep on this problem.

    3. Network Access Storage

Similar setting can also be used on NAS or network access storage.

Here are the stuff that I’m using:

Router: Aztech HW55-3G. Why I use this router? At RM92, it is cheap if compared to most other router with similar capabilities. Its also got an easy to use interface, although the size is quite bulky.

    Aztech HW550-3G

USB Modem: E153 Huawei Modem (this came together with my Maxis sim card)

The device that I want to serve: Mini Computer ARM 2440

    Before you do anything:

Here’s the part where it got me stumped. I’ve only set this thing up with Digi and Maxis, so I don’t know about other telco and what you need to do:

Maxis: You need to call their broadband hotline- 1800822000 and get them to make your IP ‘public’. By default, ALL MAXIS dynamic IPs are ‘privatised’, which means that you can’t even ping them. Why they do this? God knows. In order to be able to ping your IP and its related ports, you need to make sure that it has been made ‘public’. They’ll also give you some guide to new settings, which includes changing your APN to something else.

Digi: You don’t need to do anything. Their dynamic IPs are already public by default. That’s why I think it is preferable to go with Digi.

    Setting up the thing:

    1. Make sure everything is connected. Turn everything on and setup the internet connection on the Aztech HW550-3G just as you normally would- no tutorial on this as it is pretty much straight forward.

    2. And then the next thing to do is to get the IP for your device, in my case, the Mini 2440. You need to set this up internally. See instructions. I recommend setting up a static IP. Avoid 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.1.1 (depending on your router)

    3. Enable Port Forward on the Aztech router. Port Forward to your device IP- which you have set in the previous section. Regarding which ports to forward, I would recommend 80, but this entirely depends on your device.

    4. Set up Dynamic DNS (If you need a static address). Register for a free DNS at www.no-ip.com and enter the credentials in the Dynamic DNS. The thing about dynamic DNS is, the IP changes every time you turn on/off the USB modem. One day it might be 113.210.xxx.xxx and one day it can be 113.190.xxx.xxx. With the Dynamic DNS, this will give you a static address (e.g. yourname.zapto.org), rather than using 113.xxx.xxx.xxx etc etc.

If you follow the above steps, you should be able to access your device, be it an IP camera, PC, server, network access storage (NAS) etc via your Maxis or Digi USB modem through the Aztech HW550-3G router.
